From Scranton, PA, meet Melissa, the maker of My Littlest 1. Wonderful hats, blankets, and hip items for your ‘littlest 1’.
Why did you turn to your handmade craft and business?
After our first son was born in 2013, I started making things for him that I wasn’t able to find in stores. Growing up, my mom had made many items for me, and they were special, having something mom-made doesn’t compare to something store bought. My husband continued to encourage me and finally I made the decision to open a shop.
What inspires your craft?
My two sons have been my entire inspiration. My online shop was put into motion shortly after our first son was born, hence the name ‘my littlest 1’ as I commonly referred to him once he joined our family.
What are a few benefits and challenges of being a handmade artisan?
As a handmade artisan, I have a studio set up in my home which I would say this is by far the biggest benefit. I am able to spend priceless time with my two boys, and be apart of their every moment as they learn and grow together. Finding time to be wife, mom, and the owner of an online shop, alongside a full time job I fulfill from home as well is very challenging. There never seems to be enough hours in a day!
Describe the process behind the production of your craft.
All of the items that come from My Littlest 1 have been made with care as if they were for one of my own children. Fabrics are prewashed to ensure they don’t shrink, I cut, press and sew each item that comes out of my shop. And then pack, post and mail each one!
Do you have a favorite memory surrounding your craft, company, and customers?
Some of my favorite memories would have to be starting My Littlest 1 with my sister’s help, having a sale within the very first week of it being open, and most of all getting positive feedback and seeing photos of my handmade items with other little ones.
Do you have any advice for other artisans?
I think it is important to follow your heart. Allow your creativity to spill out onto each and every item you make!
