Good photography is key to successfully selling and marketing your goods and crafts. Many search engines have the capability to ignore urls through a “do not show products without pictures” option. Don’t count yourself out of people’s searches right off the bat!
A photo is the first (and maybe most important) way to attract buyers and to convince consumers that your products are well made, beautiful and stylish. Especially when selling digitally, consumers have no other choice but to trust the pictures they see.

1. Make your photos look appealing:
- The more appealing the products, the more they will sell.
- Make sure the lighting accentuates the product details and is evenly lit.
- Take pictures from multiple angles to make sure you get the best picture.
- Showcase alternate shots of the same product. Many consumers like to see detailed shots and lifestyle shots.
4. Stay Neutral:
- Make sure you are not detracting attention from product being showcased
- Pick a natural background or other neutral colored stylistic elements that only add to the setup
- Creating a scene is great but make sure it is obvious to the consumer which item is being sold.
2. Show the product at work:
- Showing your product in action gives it credibility.
- If you selling a wearable good, photograph the product on a model.
- If you are selling home decor, create a visual scene with the product incorporated. Visually it completes the picture + people can then visualized the product in their home!
- If you are selling gift items, show off your packaging, too!
5. Editing
- That doesn’t mean just add a filter!
- Although filters are great because they add color and excitement, they can often alter the quality + and color of the product you are selling.
3. Scale:
- Help your consumers visualize product size
- If you are photographing a necklace, instead of solely mentioning lengths, place a stemmed flower next to the item or on a model!
- Consumers want to know how this item will look in their lives so any artfully arranged references are helpful.
